In 1834, Ambrose Comstock along with his father Beebe Comstock purchased all the land and surrounding land where Sleepy Hollow is today. Ambrose grew up fishing in the creek and farming the lands. After his mother died, Ambrose inherited the land and the townspeople called this area Ambrose Woods.
Sylvania was considered a village until 1960 when the census brought the population count over 5,000 needed to become a city. In 1960, the village of Sylvania became the City of Sylvania. In 1961, homes were developed to form Sleepy Hollow.
The Sleepy Hollow covered bridge was first developed in 1961. Sitting over Ten Mile Creek, the bridge was featured in early advertisements for Sleepy Hollow. It was last rebuilt in 2009 and constructed with white oak timber. Over the years, it has become a landmark for Sleepy Hollow and the Sylvania community.
